Structural Corrections for Heart Conditions Present From Birth In Children and Adults
Congenital heart disease, structural abnormalities of the heart present from birth, covers a spectrum
from simple, well-defined defects to highly complex malformations affecting
multiple chambers and valves. While many congenital conditions can be treated
with catheter-based techniques without surgery, some require open surgical
correction. Apollo CVHF's cardiac surgery team performs surgical repair of congenital
heart defects in both children and adults.
When Is Surgery Required?
Not all congenital heart
conditions require surgery. Many ASDs, VSDs, and PDAs can be closed using
catheter-delivered devices without opening the chest. Surgery is typically required
when the defect is too large or complex for a device, when it is accompanied by
other structural abnormalities that need correction at the same time, or when
previous catheter-based treatment has not been sufficient.
For complex congenital malformations such as tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, or severe
pulmonary stenosis, surgery has been the cornerstone of treatment for decades.
Congenital Surgery in Adults
The majority of children born with
congenital heart disease now survive to adulthood a significant change from a
generation ago. As a result, there is a growing population of adults who need
specialist congenital cardiac surgery, either because their original repair has
developed complications over time or because a congenital abnormality was not
detected or not fully corrected in childhood.
Adults with congenital heart
disease presenting for surgical treatment require a level of specialist
knowledge and planning that goes beyond general cardiac surgery. Apollo CVHF's
surgical team has experience in this patient group.
What to Expect
The specific procedure, recovery
timeline, and risks depend entirely on the nature and complexity of the
congenital defect. Before any recommendation is made, our team will carry out a
thorough assessment, including echocardiography, CT or MRI imaging, and a
detailed clinical evaluation.
Every congenital heart patient is
discussed by our multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and
cardiac anaesthesiologists before a surgical plan is agreed.
